Working cowboys

On the weekend when I wasn't at the dressage show at the stable where I ride (doing photos, not showing), I was at a working cowboy clinic/camp held at a ranch about a forty minute drive from the city. The clinic event for the afternoon I was there was calf roping, but one of my favorite shots wasn't an action shot, rather was this one of the instructors having a visit before the afternoon session started. In the background is the picturesque old-style barn, now 100 years old and still in good working condition.

I have posted this shot and a few more, plus a write-up on the camp on my "home" blog, which you can read here http://judywoodartphotography.blogspot.com/ "When Worlds Collide" June 23rd posting.

I met yesterday with a web designer so there is now officially some hope that I will have a photo display and sales website in the not too distant future. Thanks for checking this out.

Looking Back

Don't you wonder sometimes what they see that we miss? I liked the idea of the faraway expression that horses get out in an open field. Its like you can take the horse out of the wild but not the wildness out of the horse! Here's to that free spirit inside every horse.

To see more of my equine and animal art please visit my blog and website.

Thanks for looking!

Sue Steiner

Study in graphite of a horses' leg.

Here's "Elbow Room".
The wee story behind this drawing is the direct result of Albert Camus' fantastic quote "freedom is nothing else but a chance to be better".

SO, I decided to take a (well needed) break from commission and exhibition work, let go of the various pressures and see what my mind would give me.
I became deaf to "what might be nice to draw" and set myself instead a biggish technical challenge.
How do you or rather how would I give a vertical line energy?

"Elbow Room" is taken from reference photos I have had (stashed away in both my mind and studio) for over 7 years. This is the foreleg of a Rh.D. Kaltblutt stallion stationed at the Warendorf National Stud (Landgestuet Warendorf) .
I used pencil (2B & 6B) for the entire drawing. The shadow on the left leg is "glazed" over with loose charcoal (6B).
