New Oil Painting by Kerry Nelson

A herd of wild mustangs gallop for sanctuary over the side of a steep hill. With the future of America's wild horses in question, I find myself dispairing of thier fate, and, I am impelled to paint them (always a favorite subject of my art) once again, perhaps in an attempt to capture the freedom, beauty, and, dignity that our wild horses have always represented...at least to me!

APPALOOSA ART

Here is my latest creation using Corel Painter. It is my tenth piece using this new digital medium. I only hope to get better and better at it. I am especially fond of the quickness I can paint my horses. Would love to venture into highly detailed hyper-realistic works someday.
Come back often to see what I am up too...

A Tender Moment, oils by Sue Steiner

I painted this slightly abstract horse painting with a palette knife and thick impasto oil paint.  There is lots of texture and interest as the brush strokes reveal underlying colors.  I liked the pose of this mare and foal and as we head into spring think of the new babies that will soon be hitting the ground!

I have been revamping my blogs and web sites so if you would like to see more of my work or purchase this piece you can go to my main web site at http://www.suesteiner.com/  I also have a blog devoted to the subject of horses and healing in a humorus slant at http://www.amulti-coloredlife.blogspot.com/  Abstract Horse Art for sale online is here and another devoted to info and tributes to pets and horses here.

I also have a gallery/studio called White Horse Studio in the arts district of Canton Ohio at 324 Cleveland Ave. NW to see or discuss Original Artwork and pet portrait commissions.

Painting a Dog a Day by Kimberly Kelly Santini

"Koda's Curls," 8" x 10", portrait of two Curly Horses in the snow, acrylic on board, available for purchase to the first one asking nicely, $449. Inquiries (including booking your own pet portrait, from miniature size [4" x 4"] to larger than life) may always come to me.
Today's snow day wasn't much of a surprise - we got 9+ inches dumped on us, with at least another inch coming during the night, so it's most likely tomorrow will be a repeat performance. Although it's a challenge carving work time out amongst a herd of kids during the daylight hours, it's also a bit of a breather because after school and evening activities get put on hold. Gotta look at the pros and the cons, right?
I led a dozen amazingly talented kids in a Creative Journalling class this past weekend - you can see photos on the studio's facebook page (and while you're there, sign up to be a fan!). There's another class this coming Saturday, so if you are interested, giveLittle Monsters a call and sign your child up. It was a great time.
And provided there is continued interest, I'll make these journalling classes a regular thing, so it is important to let me know what you think!
Thanks, as always, for looking at - and sharing - my artwork with your friends and family.

Paint

Every 4 to 8 weeks, Linda Shantz and I host an equine themed Virtual pARTy. A pARTy is where a group of artists work from the same reference photo, creating their work within a 24 hour period. The resulting artwork is posted on the pARTy blog, so that everyone can linger over the incredible variety and individual styles inspired by the same photograph. (psst! If you are interested in playing along with the February pARTy, you have until this Saturday at midnite EST to complete and submit your entry - details here).

So, without further ado, here's my entry for this month's pARTy:

"Up Close (Percy)," 6" x 8", portrait of a Curly Horse, acrylic on board, $329 to the first one asking nicely. Inquiries (including booking your own pet portrait, from miniature size [4" x 4"] to larger than life) may always come to me.

I visited Percy and his herd of Curly Horses at my friend's last weekend, and loved every minute.
These horses were huge teddy bears, smothering my kids with slobbery kisses, goobering all over my camera lens, and doing just about anything for a sliver of apple. Personalities aside, they were beyond gorgeous, with ringlet drenched manes and tails and literal waves of tight curls hugging every curve. You can see more of my photos from this weekend on the studio's Facebook page.

Percy is a Curly Spotted Saddle Horse, Tobiano Buckskin (did I get that right?!). Bottom line, drool worthy sweetness with a mass of subtle, lovely color sealed with dark lashes and eyeliner.

Meanwhile, I have three other Curly paintings in various stages. I am going to get a heck of a lot of mileage out of this last weekend, and just might start to make a pain of myself at Curly Ranch. Consider yourself forewarned!

Thanks, as always, for looking at - and sharing - my artwork with your friends and family.
Kim

PS On Saturday I'm teaching a Creative Journalling class at Lake Orion's Little Monsters Toy Shop - sign your child up, then get them psyched to make a few Monster pages in their journal (all while you duck next door and have a latte or go across the street for a marguerita - I got you covered!!).

"Winter shelter" Black Mustang with his owner, Watercolor.

I've finished "Winter shelter" 10 x 14 $1,200.00. Inquiries may come to my email at debflood@debfloodart.com For the moment, this painting has been entered into an Equine Art exhibit, so is not available for purchase right  now. If you are interested in this painting, or having one like it done for yourself, email me and we can talk about it.
I really enjoy painting this type of imagery. It's that emotional connection between a human and a horse that I so love to paint.

Charlie's Buddy

Charlie's Buddy
24 x 30 original acrylic
Copyright Carole Rodrigue 2010

This horse is a rodeo horse I'd photographed a few years ago. He was with several other horses, and I'd seen the photo hundreds of times. Then lately, I was feeling uninspired and decided to look through some of my old references, and bam! Just like that, standing among the other horses, this one stood out and I immediately knew what I was going to paint! So, here's the final result.

This painting is for sale and you can get more information by contacting my through my website at http://www.carolerodrigue.net/  Thanks for looking!

Can goats apply on the horse art site?

Called "Exploring", this 12 x 16 acrylic was started last year at a demonstration and talk for the Hemet Valley Art Association. I finished it up today, and will be taking the original to the demonstration next Wednesday. I just love working with the thin veils of color, developing interesting passages within larger values and hues. It takes time, but I have time right now. I especailly love the blues on the shadowed sides of the black and white kids.

Bringing a painting to a finished state is a sort of dance with what's going on in front of me coupled with the knowledge in my head. Choices are made for color, brush marks and areas to develop based upon that partnership. Oh, and listening to a good audio book doesn't hurt!

I did make time today to go with a great bunch of folks hiking on Sunday morning, and we all went out for brunch afterward. In the image below, I'm the one midway down the table next to the fellow in the black cap. Keeping excess pounds off is part of the strength I am finding, and I take great pleasure in being able to do many things at this point in my life. Being in good condition is a gift one gives oneself--no one else can do that for you!

Thanks to those of you who wrote yesterday, I know...however it is good to know there are others with this section on the road of experience behind them! Going out with folks helps, you betcha.

Painting a Dog a Day by Kimberly Kelly Santini

Untitled, from the Saratoga Series, 6" x 8", acrylic on Raymar panel, depicting Thoroughbreds and their jockeys on the track at Saratoga in New York, $349 to the first one who asks nicely. I know there's a great title here, but I'll be darned if I can think of it - suggestions welcomed! Your ideas (including inquiries about commissioned projects) may come straight to me.

There's something about the pagentry and color of horse racing, which aside from the beasts themselves, is mesmerizing. I wanted to capture a sliver of that with this composition - the jockeys and their mounts became a simple excuse for daubs of color. Color is such fun.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, there sits the power of black and white. I want to share with you a portrait of that my friend and uber talented Sheona Hamilton-Grant (aka The Graphite Queen) did of Finnigan. The drawing is due to arrive any day now. I'm getting a small taste of the anticipation and excitement you all go through while waiting for your paintings to arrive home.

Stay warm and safe this weekend - this latest winter storm is missing us in Michigan, but I know it's blanketing many others in the Dog a Day famiy.

"Her big easy chair" Graphite painting of a Friesian Horse.

"Her big easy chair" 8 x 10 Graphite, $95.00. Inquiries may come to my email at debflood@debfloodart.com thank you.

Now if this isn't a fairy tale scene, I don't know what is! This is the stuff that little girl dreams are made of. The princes' flowing dress, and the silver band that holds back the woman's hair. And of course the big black horse to trot away on. This Lady is riding side saddle. This is how Ladies rode back in the day, when they were to be proper and lady like.
I hope you enjoy today's graphite painting. I am taking on Graphite commissions now, if you would like to have your horse created into a lasting memory. All graphite's are created on an 11 x 14 white Strathmore Graphite paper. The completed image is in the 9 x 12 to 8 x 10 range, with no background, for $95.00 plus shipping.
Contact me through my email when you are ready to book your special portrait. Thank you.

"When Ponies Were Painted" by Kate Dardine

Painting #23 in my Painting a Day project. I've been trying to paint a horse for a few days now; for some reason, it just wasn't working, and I'd have to wipe out the horse and paint something else. The other night, inspired by a painting by Jean Richardson, I was finally able to complete a painting.

This piece is 6x8", oil on stretched canvas. Available unframed for $55. Click here to purchase or see more work.

Laureus signed, new equine drawing by Sheona Hamilton-Grant

"Laureus"
Pencil on Paper, 27x36 cm
Sheona Hamilton-Grant. All rights reserved
Reserved

What great company he was, alert, attentive, kind and oh so handsome.
Here's the finished result of another good week's work.
I wanted a three D effect.
In order to achieve this I pushed the contrast in the neck and accentuated the detail on the nose . I also used a large format so when the portrait is seen "live", Laureus really comes into the room.

There will be a little canine study next. Running off up to the studio to finish him.
Have a great Monday.
