Majestic

Majestic

During the weekend I attended the Shoalhaven Dressage Clubs 25th Anniversary competition.. setting up a display of my artwork.. as something a little different I decided to do a live demonstration of a pastel portrait.

It was a lot of fun and nice to know that people knew exactly who it was I was drawing with out me having to tell them... A big Frisian stallion named The Wizard.

"Summer Paint" 9x12 oil by Kerry Nelson

"Summer Paint" 9x12 alkyd oil on panel

A lovely palomino paint mare grazes peacefully in a grassy field dotted with summer wildflowers. Attended by her entourage of snowy egrets that eagerly snap up the disturbed insects in her path, the mare moves contentedly from grass tuft to tuft, sampling the various grasses in her home pasture.

"Forest Unicorn" 12x12 oil on canvas by Kerry Nelson

Mysterious and beautiful, a wily unicorn eludes discovery as he gracefully disappears into the forest cover. This oil on canvas was painted in a slightly more impressionistic manner from my usual as a 'relaxation and loosen-upper' after the really tightly detailed work I have been doing on the centaur paintings. This was a thoroughly enjoyable little painting that now needs a new home...I'm out of room here, ha! It is currently listed for sale on ebay and you can view the listing for more detail images or purchase the painting by clicking this link: Purchase Link: Purchase Unicorn Painting Link

Gypsy Falls ~~ Painting a Dog a Day by Kimberly Kelly Santini

(Almost finished) "Gypsy Falls," 10" x 12", portrait of a Gypsy Vanner mare, done in Golden Open Acrylics on Raymar panel, $529 to the first one asking nicely. (This would be a KILLER Valentine's Day gift!!)

Email me if you are interested.

I've been doing some mid-winter spring cleaning in the studio, and came across this painting, which I had begun - but never finished - over 2 years ago. You can see how she looked this morning in the image below.

That happens to me quite a bit. I get to a point where I can see the potential but don't trust completely in my ability to deliver.

When this happens, I tuck it away until I can look with fresh eyes (and newly honed skills) and have another go.

That's what's happened with this girl.

And I thought she was done an hour ago, but I see now that I want the bottom of her tail pinker, like in the "before" version. I want the light on it to be warm and glowing, and the yellow, while beautiful, doesn't convey that sense. This is an easy fix.

Then, a coat of varnish and she's ready to find a home.

Meanwhile, thanks, as always, for supporting my artwork!
Kim

PS We're in the homestretch here with respect to this month's 10% newly booked commissions. The project has to be booked during this January, but can happen any time during 2011. Shoot me an email if you are interested! I booked 9 new portraits last week - let's see if we can't match that this one!!

Before

This is a mare I met at an equine breed parade in the fall of 2008 - I shot oodles of photos of both her and her little filly. She is a Gypsy Vanner, a breed that I adore painting.

Their dramatic markings, draft confirmation, and heavy feathering makes for fantastical subject matter.

Add in some soft backlighting and it becomes almost too good to be true.

Winter Royalty

This beautiful horse lives about 20 miles from our house.  While Robert and I were out driving round looking for photos, we discovered her in her pasture.  She's turned out for the winter, to do as she pleases-she's a Montana range horse.  We were delighted to find her, looking so beautiful in the winter snow.

Now we present her to you....

Horse in the snow, near Square Butte, Montana

Purchase this image here, cards, prints, canvas giclee of Horse in the snow, near Square Butte, Montana

Sometimes in winter, the light and air have a wonderful quality.  This was one of those days and it was awesome to be able to have a horse in the scene as well.  One of my greatest joys, is being able to share the scenes I find in Montana with you.

I hope you enjoy Montana photos by Donna Ridgway.

Rumbles in the Sky Western Watercolor by Debbie Flood

This is my latest Watercolor painting, Rumbles in the sky. This painting is 22 x 29 inches on 300lb Arches Watercolor Paper. $2,500.00 Inquiries to purchase may come to my email, debflood@debfloodart.com Thank you.
This painting went relatively easy, to my surprise. I have never painted this large in watercolor before. But given the subject matter and what I wanted to say in the painting, it needed to be painted large. I photographed the subject at a Barrel Racing event. It was mid morning and the morning light was illuminating her braid, hat and the horse, bouncing light around on the white markings of the Paint Horse. In order to show these elements, it just had to be a large image.

If you would like to see this work evolve as a work in progress, you can view all the entries on my Blog at http://debbieflood.blogspot.com All my studio updates, news and recent works & exhibits are posted there.
