It is with great pleasure that I welcome Spa Fine Art into the Painting a Dog a Day family. Near historic Saratoge Springs Racetrack in upstate New York, Spa Fine Art is the latest gallery to represent my artwork.

As you may know, I make an annual summer sojourn to Saratoga to collect racing references and enjoy an artists retreat with a number of friends. Spa Fine Art is a favorite stop of ours - after we load up on pastries at Mrs. Londons, we gorge ourselves on the eye candy at the gallery.

Spa will hang a dozen of my paintings now, with plans to add new pieces in the coming months.

I think this will be the perfect partnership to showcase my love of equine paintings in particular, and I look forward to working closely with Spa Fine Art as we begin to share my paintings with a new audience.

‘Spirit Horse Pass’ Watercolor by Debbie Flood

The image above, is my latest completed watercolor Spirit Horse Pass.
There was a lot of unexplained things going on, while I was creating this painting.

As many of you know, I had gone out West during the Summer of 2011. While I was in Arizona, I did as much site seeing and photograph taking as I could. What entranced me most about the place was the outcropping of rocks.

Those rocks held magical shapes and Spirits for me. I could see shapes of hands, some looked like mittens others like bare hands reaching up out of the earth, reaching to be free of their stone encasement. Other shapes took on the look of Tribes, mothers carrying children, wearing drapes of blankets and clothing over their heads, all marching towards the horizon. I felt as if I was walking on sacred ground, and the past of the West was all around me. There is so much History there, and for me, the stones, boulders and rocks were telling me a loud story.

Several weeks ago, I was flipping through my images of riders and horses, and also going through my Arizona trip photos. There was those rocks, and I knew I had to start using them in backgrounds of my paintings.
The boulders in this painting, Spirit Horse Pass, are those of Prescott, Arizona. I had gone to visit the Phippen Museum of Western Art. As I arrived a little early, before they opened, I set off on a landscape adventure. And there was those rocks with the hands and mittens.

Here at the studio, I found the image I wanted from my files, and sketched out the rock's shapes for this painting. I transferred them onto the watercolor paper, along with the rider and horse, reference photo taken at a local horse show. I didn't have a lot of planned out things for this painting, as I got the image transferred and ready to paint. This rider and horse are the same team I had used in the watercolor Moon shine run.

As I started to lay down color onto the front of the horse, I could visualize an Appaloosa. I grew up with Appys and the love and bond I had with them came forward.
So, I had my horse color, and as I painted the horse, the hand print on the shoulder showed up. Wow, I thought, and I continued on that theme.
Then I thought, I would like to keep the background the same colors as the horse and stay along that 'spot' theme. I thought "snow". So I proceeded to lay in rock color here and there, leaving the paper white, where the snow would be. I worked it all, so it would have a pleasing flow.

When a good amount of rocks and snow was built up, I stepped back and took a look at how it was coming along, over all. Wow! What did I see?! I saw horse head shapes emerging from the rocks and snow. Some looked like race horses with blinkers on, others looked like horse head skulls, others were partial face, nose, arched necks and so on. I was totally amazed and dumb founded at what was happening with this painting! Believe me, none of this was planned.

As I kept working on the rocks, I just painted and let my subconscious take over. I didn't want to "try" to paint horse shapes, I just let "what will be, will be". And sure enough, there was more Horses in the rocks. I then had my title for this painting, Spirit Horse Pass. This painting came from a place that I cannot explain. It was not planned, it was not foreseen.

The rocks and landscape spoke to me, out there in Arizona, and are still speaking to me, through my art.
Pretty darn cool, if you ask me.

So, take a look, and see how many horse heads and pieces you can find, in the rocks and snow. I found around 20. There is no right answer, it's all in what you, as an individual, are open to seeing.

Off to a good start

‘Double trouble’ Hereford Calves and a Cowboy in Watercolor by Debbie Flood

I finished Double trouble today. 16 x 20 inches on 300 lb Arches Watercolor paper. $1,400.00

I found a good solution to all that sage brush in the background. I created shadow from the mountain onto the top of the brush back there, which sent it further back there and hazed from the morning mist and cool air. To better push this feeling home, I created breath coming from the animals and cowboy, to show the coolness of the morning.

I got up early that morning, to go photographing in Taos, NM. The air was cool and crisp. I loved it! But by the time I was photographing thee cute Herefords, it was very hot, and the sun was baking down. I love remembering what that cool morning was like, so I recreated that time of day.

The Importance of Being Educated

Yesterday I had the very great honor of being awarded the 2012 HITS Themal Desert Circuit (CA) Show Program cover. HITS produces some of the richest and most highly attended and regarded hunter/ jumper show circuits in the country, and to be selected as the cover artist is quite a big deal. I've been invited to the HITS Ocala Fine Art Gala several times, and I was also honored to participate in the HITS Saugerties Art Gala in 2010. I've never been to Thermal - in fact, I've never been to California - but it looks like I now have an excuse to go! Hundreds of riders from across the country attend these multi-week shows, and I'm excited to be able to put my work in front of a West Coast audience.

The HITS Ocala cover was also awarded this week, and it went to a wonderful artist from Florida - Mary Verrandeaux. I've had the pleasure of meeting Mary a few times (at the Ocala Art Gala, in fact) and I really, really like her work. But my favorite thing about Mary is that she and I graduated from the same college - the Ringling College of Art and Design. She graduated in the 1980's, and I graduated in 2000, both of us with degrees in illustration.

I owe a debt of gratitude to my college, and I'm proud to say I'm an alum. I came to Ringling in 1996, with a decent amount of drawing skill from high school and middle school art classes. Magazine pictures, attempted photorealism, unremarkable still lifes, the usual. My first year in college, our professors took all we knew about art and threw it out the window. They challenged us to rethink the whole concept of how to draw, how to paint, how to SEE, and in the process, they tore down everything we thought we knew about art and forced us to start again from the beginning. My second year painting teacher had such a formidable reputation that almost of the students assigned to her class switched to the other painting instructor. I had an unspoken rule never to change professors, so I ended up in a painting class with only three other students, and for a whole year, we had almost an hour of one-on-one instruction every other day. (Painting classes were 3 hours each, three days a week.) We learned to PAINT. (We also learned to stretch our own canvas and make our own gesso, but that's another story.) I had only had one unhappy experience with oil paints (I painted a hideous flower and my mother rightfully banished the painting to the laundry room) before I walked into her class, so if I have any skill at painting today, a huge amount of credit goes to her. My illustration teacher was an innovator of American illustration (seriously, he's in the book "Innovators of American Illustration" by Steve Heller) and introduced us to the idea of art as narrative. He gave me some of the best art advice I've ever received in my life, and I often think of his words when I'm particularly vexed by a painting. His daughter was "into" horses, and she actually showed at Madison Square Garden (pony division, if I recall correctly), and so he and I spent a lot of time discussing horses. He gave me hope that a career revolving around equine and wildlife art was possible and encouraged me to continue on that path, and I'm forever grateful to him.

I had other influential teachers in figure, printmaking, English lit, and computer illustration, but I will forever cherish the four years of art history we were required to take. We weren't just taught art history with names of artists, dates and schools of thought, we were immersed in the time. We learned how the art and the music and the fashion of an era went together, how politics, war, famine, wealth and industry affected not only the art of a nation but impacted the entire worldview of its people, and how such events spurred and nurtured - or stifled - the proliferation of the arts worldwide. If I am ever fortunate enough to teach art history, that is the model I will use. Art doesn't develop in a vacuum, and to teach nothing but dry names and dates robs the student - and the teacher - of the most compelling parts of the story.

“The Climb” Wins the ‘President’s Award’ International Museum of Art, El Paso, Texas

The Studio of Debbie Flood is very proud to announce that the Watercolor Painting The climb has won the President’s Award at the International Museum of Art, Sun Bowl Exhibit 2011 in El Paso, Texas.

The Sun Bowl Exhibit is an Annual International juried competition, this year juried by Tim Gallegly, Nationally known artist.

This is the second year that Debbie has had work accepted in this prestigious Museum Exhibit and Sale.

The Sun Bowl is the Southwest's longest running art exhibit. Originally dubbed the Sun Carnival Art Exhibit at its inception in 1949, the International Museum of Art continues the long El Paso tradition of the integration of artistic and athletic excellence.

Each year, the International Museum of Art sponsors the Sun Bowl Art Exhibit, a juried competition featuring the top artists from all over the country. The exhibit is held in conjunction with the Sun Bowl festivities, and typically runs from November to December. Check our calendar for exact dates.

Since the International Museum of Art is along the Sun Bowl Parade route and houses the Sun Bowl sponsor parade viewing party, this exhibit provides an opportunity for all involved in the Sun Bowl festivities to see this yearly show.

This year the Exhibit runs November 5 – December 31, 2011

While the Sun Bowl Art Exhibit is on display, the public is welcome to come and view the works at this, the Southwest’s largest juried art exhibit. All items on display in the exhibit are available for purchase and selected items are also available in our online store.

More Progress on the Black Horse and Cowboy on the run “Moon shine run” Watercolor by Debbie Flood

The lower photo shows the progress from Sunday and Monday.

The top photo shows today’s progress. Today I worked on the rider’s face. Strangely enough, he came out looking like Kenny Rodgers, or Santa Clause! ha ha…pick one! I would rather not think of Santa Clause going after Moon-Shine…ha ha, so I shall pick it to be Kenny Rodgers. I mean, after all, he did play the Gambler, and sang a few of those ‘tough’ songs.

Other areas I worked on were the rider’s jacket, and down the left leg and stirrup. I am having such fun with this painting!

Today, I went and took care of my Print Proofs at the printer’s. Three new paintings are ready for print orders. The proofs look wonderful! We are all set to start the Limited Edition Run of 50 and also, I am introducing Original Hand Painted Prints! These Prints are 100% Archival, printed on Arches Velvet Watercolor Paper. A nice heavy paper too. I hand paint with my watercolors into the print. It creates a nice rich glow, that cannot be achieved by printing alone. These prints are a little more expensive to purchase, but so worth it! They come with a Certificate of Authenticity, so you know you are getting a genuine Debbie Flood Original Hand Painted Print. They are also hand signed by the Artist.

To be honest, I never realised you could drown in pencil shavings and graphite...

You can.

It's happening at this very moment, here in the studio.

Christmas commissions have been "on the go" for the last 6 weeks (most excellent news) and Christmas is roughly another 6 weeks away (not such excellent news).

Every minute now crucial to getting the next commissions finished on time.

The result: days in my black and white world are madly fun: studio's buzzing, the artist scribbling, music pumping, Wilbur and Bernadette rocking, coffee brewing, cats if not playing paperweights very busy being feline.

Sadly, due to the world of secrecy surrounding all the commissions coming on and off the drawing board, none can be shown.

However, I do have one that I "prepared" last month.

Frederic is horse with oodles of talent who has given his rider and owner many a happy moment.

“Canyon Shadows” and “Minor Adjustments” Western Art Watercolors by Debbie Flood

I finished two watercolors, since I last posted.

This one is Canyon shadows, 16 x 16 inches square on 300lb Arches Watercolor Paper.

During my trips out West, I saw a lot of different rock formations, and the shadows became spirits of the west, to me. Large birds of prey would fly over-head and their shadows would flicker across the ground, rocks, and on me. When I started this painting, I didn’t have a thought about those shadows, until I got a little more into the painting, and I realized what was spooking the horse and making the young Cowgirl look quickly. This shadow of the Eagle coasts across the canyon and soars up across the horse and rider. I could have worked up more detail in the background and brought you along on my exact journey, but because I see so many different things in this painting, I decided to stop here, and let you ‘see’ what might be there, for spirits, feelings, and shapes. Enjoy.

This is a top view, of a print of a rodeo cowboy and his horse. You can see the image, wrapping around the canvas, and it does so on all four sides.
This photo was taken at a genuine Ranch Rodeo in Montana. Ranch rodeo, is when neighboring ranchers get together, and form teams, to compete against each other for the top prizes. The events are much like real ranch work, including branding and wild cow milking!

Think Outside the Christmas Box

As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods -- merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. This year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Yes there is!

It's time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper?

My brother sent this to me and I thought I'd share:

"Everyone -- yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from your local American hair salon or barber?

Gym membership? It's appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some health improvement.

Who wouldn't appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, American owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates.

Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plunking down the Benjamins on a Chinese made flat-screen? Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course.

There are a bazillion owner-run restaurants -- all offering gift certificates. And, if your intended isn't the fancy eatery sort, what about a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint. Remember, folks this isn't about big National chains -- this is about supporting your home town Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open.

How many people couldn't use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy?

Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would LOVE the services of a local cleaning lady for a day.

My computer could use a tune-up, and I KNOW I can find some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running.

OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, and pottery and beautiful wooden boxes

Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip. And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at your hometown theatre? Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands.

Honestly, people, do you REALLY need to buy another ten thousand Chinese lights for the house? When you buy a five dollar string of light, about fifty cents stays in the community. If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip.

You see, Christmas is no longer about draining American pockets so that China can build another glittering city. Christmas is now about caring about US, encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow their dreams. And, when we care about other Americans, we care about our communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn't imagine. THIS is the new American Christmas tradition.

Forward this to everyone on your mailing list -- post it to discussion groups -- throw up a post on Craigslist in the Rants and Raves section in your city -- send it to the editor of your local paper and radio stations, and TV news departments. This is a revolution of caring about each other, and isn't that what Christmas is about?"

International Museum of Art of El Paso, Sun Bowl Exhibit 2011 by Debbie Flood

I’m very pleased to announce that three of my watercolors were accepted into the International Museum of Art of El Paso, Sun Bowl Exhibit 2011. El Paso Texas. November 4 ~ December 31, 2011.

This is a mile stone for me! Why ?, you ask? , I have entered this exhibit in the past, (Artists are allowed to enter three works to be juried by a Museum Committee) and I’ve only been able to get one out of the three accepted. This year, all three were accepted! That’s huge for me!

Peek and Boo ~~ Kimberly Kelly Santini

I blocked this painting in a couple weeks ago, but then got sidetracked with some other commissions. I had wanted to finish the horses for an exhibition, but the deadline came and went and there just wasn't enough hours in the day. (That's the risk one takes when practicing only the best sort of procrastination.)

The painting got set aside until this morning when I re-discovered it inside my in-box. I have a number of canine sketches on the docket for this week, but I wanted to work on something rather challenging for today, and these two fit the bill.

And a challenge I got! 1/2 way through my painting session, I realized some major drawing issues, and had to resketch and re-paint the majority of the canvas. Oh, I hate it when that happens.

No amount of paint-pushing can ever fix a badly drawn composition. I've stopped trying to fool myself.

It's happening on more and more blogs. Someone checks in, leaves an anonymous message, and then runs away.

Well, the running away doesn't really happen. But seriously that's what I visualize whenever I see an anonymous comment - the fact that the individual don't believe in themselves enough to sign a name undermines their message.

And at the same time they completely eliminate the possibility of any sort of dialogue.

Isn't that one of the best parts of the internet? the conversations that play out because idea sharing occurs over blurred geographic and cultural boundaries?

The end of June, 2011, I was in Angel Fire New Mexico, riding a great horse through the National Forests and Mountains of Angel Fire and over looking Eagle Nest Lake. What a gorgeous day that was. Filled with magic for me. Something like a Cinderella Story. The Prince of the story was the place, horses and Gallery Exhibit for me.

This painting isn’t the horse that I rode, but it is one that was at the Ranch that day. Gorgeous white-gray Quarter Horse. The wind was blowing up dust devils and this horse was on the watch and listening for something in the wind.

It seems like photographer Juliet Harrison's imagery has always turned me on. I have several of her silver gelatin prints in the studio and scattered throughout my house, and that has nothing to do with the fact that she is also a cherished friend.

The way she sees the world through her viewfinder is brilliant - and usually causes me to do a double take and look again. I mean really look.

And when I shot the reference for this painting, she happened to be standing alongside me, taking a similar one.

I'd like to say that great minds think alike, but I'm not taking any credit for this. It's all Juliet's inspiration.

Nuzzling Hope ~~ Kimberly Kelly Santini

"Nuzzling Hope," 6" x 8", done in Golden Open Acrylics on a Raymar panel. Commissioned portrait of a paint mare and foal, the latest painting in my Gratitude Series (paintings of animals who were once homeless).

Hope (the mare above) and Lucky Star (the foal) were 2 of a dozen horses rescued in Arizona this summer. Abandoned, malnourished, some injured, most suffering from foot problems/abcesses/serious infections, the horses were in rough shape.

They were moved to a clean and safe facility, Hoofbeats With Heart, where they received proper veterinary care and nourishment, among other things like feet trimmings, baths, and TLC (You can see photos on a Facebook page dedicated to the 12 horses' recovery).

All 12 have all been adopted out - what a fabulously happy ending to the story, right? Yeah, I agree!

My client, who was involved in the rescue, commissioned Hope and Lucky Star's portrait. She is donating this original painting to Hoofbeats With Heart, where the piece will be auctioned off as part of their Charity Horse Show the weekend of October 1st.

35th International Bank Exhibit, Raton, New Mexico September 21-23, 2011

I am so very pleased to announce that I was “Invited” to send works, of my choosing, to the 35th International Bank Exhibit in Raton, New Mexico.

Back in June, during my Gallery Opening debut in Angel Fire, New Mexico, at the Angel Fire ArtSpace Gallery, I was contacted by the Director of the International Bank Exhibit of Raton, New Mexico, Ray Wolf. What a surprise that was! The jury process for this exhibit was being waived, as my work had already been seen, and I was being recommended to exhibit there. WOW!

Three works of my choosing. Hmmm…what would I send???

In August I had a trip to Sedona, Arizona with works in the group Invitational Exhibit, ‘Lamingtons and Apple Pie’. What a week that was! Another big ‘WOW’. Because of this exhibit, I couldn’t yet decide which paintings would go to the Raton Bank Exhibit.

Once home, and the works that were slated to return home from the Sedona exhibit were home, I picked out the three works I would send to Raton.

Here are the works that have just arrived there, today. The exhibit takes place September 21-23, 2011.

Blue Plaid, From the Saratoga Series ~~ Kimberly Kelly Santini

It's become a tradition, my summertime trek to upstate New York, where I meet up with girlfriends from all over the US and Canada for a long weekend of horses, art, and friendship.

This year I returned with nearly 1000 photos, the majority of them taken in the early mornings.

Early mornings at the track are full of bustle - visual, audial, and olefactory - and they carry a distinctly different flavor than the pomp and pagentry shown to the public on racing days.

For instance, when we arrived shortly after 7am, this big guy had already trained and bathed, and was being handwalked around the foggy shedrow. His body was steaming underneath the jaunty blue plaid cooler, and he followed my camera with a knowing eye.

"Paint me," he said, not as a request, but simply a statement of fact or mutual understanding.

I was more than happy to oblige.

Remember "For Her Eyes Only"? This painting is one of mine, also from The Saratoga Series, a piece I created last month.

Initially I saw a photograph of on Facebook, and marvelled at her unusual markings. I did a little research and learned she was a filly in training at Saratoga. I emailed a couple friends who were headed to the track and asked them to keep an eye out for her.

Then, the very next morning, when reviewing my own track photos, who did I discover but this same little lady! being hotwalked directly in front of Mr. Blue Plaid, no less!

I had been so distracted by Mr. Blue Plaid and another jet black irish mare getting hosed down across the way, that I didn't pay this lady her proper due.

She's saying to me, "Hey, stupid! Over here - I have the goods, too."

And apparently she does. She broke her maiden in her first start, flashing quite a bit of speed.

This is a painting that I did while in college of my pony, Patches. It is currently in the collection of my sister, who has a virtual gallery of my works in her home. This one is the largest at about 36x48 if I'm not mistaken. Patches' main claim to fame in our family is that I used to confuse the day of his death with my husband's birthday as they are two days apart. I have learned.

"For Her Eyes Only," 5" x 7", the latest addition to my "Saratoga Series" of paintings, portrait of a Thoroughbred Racehorse, done in Golden Open Acrylics on an Ampersand Gessobord (see my reference material below). Add this painting to your collection for $289. Inquiries may come to me.

Yesterday, Three Chimneys Farm (a Thoroughbred racehorse breeding facility) shared a photo of a 2 year old filly on their Facebook page. I was immediately struck by her unique markings (see the skull shape in her blaze?), and wanted to paint her.

I did a little research, and discovered she was currently in Saratoga, New York - even handily won her first race yesterday!

I sent a emails to friends who were in the Saratoga area - were they planning on going to the track soon, and if so, could they keep an eye out for her?

Meanwhile, this afternoon, I pulled up my own references (I wanted to paint a gorgeous dark bay wearing a plaid cooling sheet, a horse I photographed during my recent visit to Saratoga), and what did I discover?

Photos of For Her Eyes Only, being hotwalked after her morning bath, just ahead of that dark bay in the plaid cooling sheet.

Serendipitous, no?

Copyright Respect

I can hear the questions now - why didn't I just paint from the photo I first saw on Facebook?

Easy.

I didn't take the photo.

Which means I didn't have permission to use it, even if I was only using it for something derivative like a painting.

The photographer automatically owns the copyright, whether said photographer is professional or amateur. (Copyrights don't just apply to authors/artists.)

That said, I can only use photographs as reference material with explicit permission from the photographer.

No matter where I come across those images.

Magazines, blogs, websites, even Facebook, are all off limits. It doesn't need to have a copyright watermark on it to be protected, either - if you didn't take the photo yourself, it belongs to someone else.

So unless you have written permission to use a photo - or even a portion of it - steer clear.

Life is too short to spend time dealing with accusations of copyright infringement.

"Morning Banter," from "The Saratoga Series," 9" x 15", Golden Open Acrylics on Ampersand Gessobord, inspired from a photo taken by Juliet Harrison. Titled after the casual conversation both riders and horses were having with each other during their gallop. Original painting available for purchase, $599. Inquiries may come to me.

When hanging at the rail (in Saratoga) with my girlfriends last month, the idea was thrown to the universe that we should all paint a piece inspired by the same photo. A few days after returning home, an email from Juliet arrived with an attachment and the official challenge began.

Everyone else jumped into their pieces with gusto, but I had a number of other commitments I needed to complete before indulging myself. I got through all but 2 of said commitments before I had used up all my willpower.

I couldn't hold back any longer!

And, as always, I see a few minor changes I want to make - this always happens after I've signed and photographed the painting. But given it's a Friday, I'd like to call it a night and kick into weekend mode. So I'll wait until tomorrow to correct the line on the front horse's ankle.

‘Gathering up the reins’ Watercolor by Debbie Flood

The painting is finally finished. I was going to send this to an exhibit I was invited to, but the Lady at the Angel Fire ArtSpace Gallery in New Mexico, requested it for her Gallery.

I have other works I can send to the exhibit, so this one will be going to the Gallery. At the moment, the frame I ordered for it, is on back order. Once I have that, I’ll be able to frame it and send it on to the Gallery in NM.

This painting is from the ride I went on in Angel Fire, NM with the Road Runner Tours. This painting depicts the Tour Guide, Gunther, and his dark Palomino mare. This is where we stopped on the side of the mountain that dropped out into an open field. Here the horses rested and we took photos of one another.

Another painting I recently finished of the horse I rode “Bullet'” The coolest place in town, will also be going to the Angel Fire ArtSpace Gallery in NM. Here is an image of it with it’s pretty Gold Wood Frame on. I’ve included the story of the Butterfly, on the back of this painting too. You can scroll down a few posts to read about the Butterflies of Angel Fire.

My next trip is coming right up! August 13th I fly out to Sedona, Arizona. I am in an Invitational Group Exhibit there. The exhibit is ‘Lamingtons and Apple Pie’. It consists of 9 of us, from Australia and the USA. The Opening Reception is August 15th at 6:30PM. There will also be a raffle of works from each artist with proceeds for the Luv shack Horse Rescue Ranch.

The exhibit runs August 15- 29, 2011. Would love to meet you at the reception!

‘Head Games’ Western Watercolor by Debbie Flood

This is a scene from the ranch at the Road Runner Tours, in Angel Fire New Mexico, where I went on my trail ride in June 2011.

This poor cowpoke patiently chased this mare around the paddock to put her bridle on. The saddle was on...but she wasn't too quick to give her head. At one point, I helped block her, so she didn't go into another adjacent paddock.

I don’t know how many hours they had gone around one another, while I was off riding through the Forests and Mountains. They weren’t there when we left, but when we got back, 2 hours later, there they were, all hot, dirty and dusty. going around and around.

Many times she seemed she would give in and he got close to her head. He’d gently put a rope over the crest of her neck, to try to use as leverage in hopes she wouldn’t budge. But…off she’d go. About an hour after we got back from our ride, he finally caught her. I think at one point, she jumped into the water trough! I heard the thunderous splash of water and metal.

Once he had her, he climbed on, and away they rode…off into the Mountains. She was calm and no problems at all. I heard someone say, “She’s a great trail horse, once you catch her and get a bridle on”.

Hmmm….is this typical for a female? Head Games. lol

Branching out

I draw and paint horses. My business cards say "equine artist". I consider myself an equine artist. (Actually, I consider myself a representational/ American impressionist painter heavily inspired by the Fauvre movement, who focuses primarily on the equine form... but who's counting?) The point is, much of my work over the past 10 years has been about horses and the world of English discipline riding. And much of my childhood scribblings were horses as well.
Well, horses and birds. In fact, my parents still have my kindergarden fingerpaintings, in which I did a whole series of ducks in a pond. (They're actually a lot of fun!) I remember an owl phase too. But the point is, chances are, if I wasn't drawing a horse, I was drawing a bird.
I did birds for my senior thesis in college. Scratchboard Indian hornbills, in fact - birds I love to look at. My first published artwork was an egret. My first professional sale was a macaw. Birds seemed a very natural Florida thing, with their bright tropical colors, lush environments, dappled shade, and giant tree branches wrapped in moss. Plus, I could walk outside most days and be inspired by the flora and fauna of Florida's Gulf Coast and her effortless beauty. When I moved to Texas, bright tropicals didn't really seem to fit the landscape so much, so I put the birds away and focused on other things.
Last week, for the first time in a long time, I did (read: finished) a bird piece. It was for a charity event here in Dallas, an exceedingly worthy cause, and I was honored to be asked to participate. The canvas was small - 10" square, and I wanted to do something different - a throwback to some of my earlier bird work. Plus, I've been on a gold leaf kick lately, and I knew I wanted to incorporate gold leaf into the piece. After reviewing my reference photos, I pulled a handful of bird pics and started to visualize a painting with each of them. One picture of Gouldian finches that I took at an aviary years ago jumped out at me, and the title of the piece practically fell in my lap.
Here is the result:

The floodgates have now opened. I've got birds on the brain. Toucans and cranes and parrots and pelicans, oh my. I'm wrapping up a few big pieces in my studio today and then hoping to start on one of the new bird pieces this weekend. They are fun and fancy free, and it feels really good to (pardon the pun) stretch my wings and move back into a genre I haven't worked with for awhile.
PS- "As Gouldian as it Gets" was quickly purchased by a lovely woman who planned to hang it next to a large painting of macaws she had at home. It's always such a pleasure to be able to meet collectors, those wonderful people who allow me to keep doing what I love to do. I hope that she enjoys the painting as much as I enjoyed making it.

Sometimes when you complete a work your not entirely happy with it when you come back and take a look later on.

That's been the case with Feather in my Cap it wasn't until I photographed the finished drawing that I realised there was a mark on the paper. Rather than rework the entire drawing I decided to add a back ground colour...

I think he blue back ground brings the horse and little girl more forward toward to the foreground in the drawing.. so thank goodness for that mark.

“The Coolest Place In Town”-Bullet. Watercolor by Debbie Flood

Here I am, playing a little ‘catch-up’ with my Blog posts! I’ve been painting fast and furious, to capture my feelings and experiences of New Mexico! My Blog posts got a little behind.

This watercolor, here, is of ‘Bullet’. He’s the horse I rode on the Road Runner Tours in Angel Fire, New Mexico. We took a ride up into the Mountains, well, actually the head quarters was sitting on the mountain! We rode for two hours into the Forest and across a field or two. I was in Seventh Heaven!

On the ride, we came out of the Forest into a clearing that over looked distant fields, Mountains and Eagle Nest Lake. Before we stopped, for some candid photo shots, I had a Butterfly flutter up between Bullet’s ears, over the crest of his neck, the saddle horn, and into my face! Over the top of my head it went, and I warned the rider behind me to watch out for that crazy Butterfly! But before I had the whole sentence out, it veered off into the woods, not bothering the horse and rider behind me. A few minutes after, I had another one do the same exact thing!

We finished up our ride, and back at the ranch, I took a bunch of photos. I hung out in the paddock with Bullet and his friends. Bullet and I formed a really great bond, and I think of him now, often. This painting I have posted here, is after the ride and Bullet hanging out by the water trough. The next day, after the ride, I drove to Eagle Nest Lake and the Cimarron Mountains. At a gift store there, I found a T-Shirt with butterflies all over it. With that Butterfly moment on Bullet, I just had to have the T-shirt!

The next day, after purchasing the Butterfly T-shirt, I took a day trip into Taos with CheyAnne. I told her about my Butterfly experience and the T-shirt. She had a look on her face, like, “No way!” She then proceeded to tell me the New Mexico Spiritual meaning of having a Butterfly flutter into your face.

“When a Butterfly flutters into your face, You are Blessed”.

I had two get into my face, one right after the other.

Bullet and I are very blessed.

Its funny how when you look at a work on the computer you can see all the things that need to be altered...

Really happy with the progress on A Feather in my Cap so far.. I made a good start on the horse.. though still quite a lot to do on its head and perhaps the direction of that rump curve as well

I blocked in the saddle cloth to give me an idea of where the darks fall on the horses body underneath that saddle colth

Just finished this one-- an 8"x10" oil. I had fun mixing color/hue changes. I actually enjoyed painting the subtle changes in the concrete areas of the background. I used some pretty vibrant greens for the trees, found they were too bright and then glazed over them a bit to tone them down.

It feels pretty exciting to be exhibiting with some of the most wonderful Watercolor Artists of our time and to be juried into this exhibit by the great Don Getz, a signature member of the American Watercolor Society.

The saddle and jeans are now completed.. and Ive now started work on the horses chest and neck... the colour in the riders shirt is still up to debate..

I may make it all pink or shades of pink.. or a mixture of colours to give the illusion of texture with out detracting from the rest of the drawing..

Yesterday you got to see the beginning stages of the painting - today I'll take you through to the final brushstrokes.

The changes may seem trivial, but these final three views include numerous tweaks and adjustments to the riders' bodies, the horses' legs, the rail, the dirt, and adding other sorts of details that make the painting sing.

And, believe it or not, there was more time invested in studying the piece and working these out than there was in getting to today's starting point!

My Grandfather

No one else in my family followed horse racing - it was something Grandpa and I shared. Some of my fondest memories are of us watching (televised) races together.

Grandpa and Grandma retired to Arkansas (near Oaklawn) and I eventually moved to California, then back to Michigan, but we always touched base during Derby Week to share our picks and predictions.

Grandpa passed away a few days after last year's race. But that hasn't kept me from sharing my pick with him. It IS tradition, after all, and isn't that what The Derby is all about?

I think his money would be on Archarcharch - he always loved the Arkansas Derby winners.

I like Brilliant Speed myself - it's that Dynaformer connection.

The Post Parade, A Lesson Painting, Part I ~~ Kimberly Kelly Santini

This morning I felt like tackling a challenging painting, so I pulled a mess of reference photos, dug out a loooong panel, and got busy. Here's what I accomplished in a few hours' work:

I started with a bold underpainting, and roughly built my first layer to reflect the composition - Light Ultramarine Blue on top, with a mixture of Cadmium Red Light, Light Magenta, and Naples Yellow on the bottom.

Then I roughly sketched in my composition. I laid down the curve of the rail, began defining basic values in the tree shapes, greened up the infield, and lightened the track. There are pockets of the underpainting exposed all over the surface - this will add vibrance to the finished piece (see how the green "sings" alongside the exposed orange?). I also retained a strip of the underpainting to indicate where the horses' feet would hit the ground.

I continued adding loose details, working from the middle of the canvas outwards to retain proper spacing. I am concerned with the progression of shapes, making certain there are relationships (defined via body language) between the ponies and their charges. I'm also paying attention to scale, making the horses at the head of the parade proportionally smaller than those in the front right edge.

In the 4th step (illustrated at the top of the blog), I'm still working with the barest of details. I've pushed more sunlight in by lightening up the track in the foreground and graying out the background trees, doing this with several layers of glaze. Notice the horses still don't have legs, many of them are also missing their heads - once I am finished with the background (including the infield), I'll start in on those sorts of details.

We've been hanging at Linda Shantz's farm all week - first you got a painting of Spider as a baby, then Billy who's just started his racing career. Today brings Linda's mare, registered name "EntertainingAngels," barn name "Monster."

Monster's job right now is nanny to yearling Baby Girl. Monster's supposed to keep Baby Girl out of trouble and teach her some manners during their days together.

Stay tuned because tomorrow we move from the farm to the track and I'll paint a race scene. Or two. Maybe even some fancy hats.......

But first, I haven't even asked - who's your Kentucky Derby pick?

A Slice of Beauty

I am grateful for whomever originally planted the deep row of daffodils in our back garden.

Our home is nearly 80 years young, and these bulbs have been welcoming warmer weather for the 8 springs we've been here. How many others have they ushered in?

Billy ~~ Painting a Dog a Day by Kimberly Kelly Santini

Billy's another horse who's been in Linda Shantz's keep, foaled on her farm and raised under her watchful eye. Under the registered name of "Oil Be Clever," (did you know that racehorses have simple barn names by which their immediate family knows them, and then unique Jockey Club registered names under which they race?), he ran for the first time last Sunday.

Billy's race is on YouTube (he's the number 1 horse). He ran excellently, first along the rail and then in some traffic in the stretch, never losing his cool, finishing in a very respectable 5th place.

His connections - and myself - are eagerly looking forward to his next start.

It's tradition in the studio that, in honor of the first Saturday in May and the Kentucky Derby, Painting a Dog a Day gets turned over to the horses during Derby Week.

Spider's doing the honor of kicking things off in grand style. Hailing from a girlfriend's farm (fellow artist Linda Shantz), he's now a strapping 2 year old in training, learning to put those long legs to work.

And Linda's got a crop of 3 new foals this year.

Lots and lots of dreams waiting to be fulfilled!
