Peek a Boo - Catherin McMillan

Peek A Boo

Been a while since I posted a blog .. will make sure to remedy that this year.. the last couple of months have been what you could call a write off ..

Finished Peek a Boo off this morning I decided to use a different paper from my usual canson pastel paper..

This time around I used art spectrum "colour fix" which is a little like working on smooth sandpaper giving the image a textured look.

Peek a Boo is  off to WA for an exhibition unless sold prior...

Thank you Katherine Waddington for the use of your photo ☺

Zac - work in progress

Zac - work in progress

Finally had a chance to work on Zac's portrait again today.. his face is coming together nicely and Ive blocked in his neck and plaits both on his neck and fore head.

I will continue working on the halter next and then his muzzle before starting on Zac's  neck.

Once Ive work on the entire drawing I will then decide how much it will need darkening

Tyson & Pez - Catherin McMillan

Tyson & Pez

Tyson & Pez's portrait was commissioned as a 21st birthday present from Kelly.. Tyson's mother..

I really enjoyed the challenge of creating all those dapples on Pez's coat.  Tyson & Pez his beautiful stallion are regular competitors on the Australian show jumping circuit.

I love immortalising these special moments in time that become treasured family heirlooms.

Freckles

And now for a touch of the equine and a lovely break from all those pop art pups..

Freckles is a private commission for a birthday gift.. I enjoy the challenge of all those spots and making sure the hair is travelling in the correct direction..  Horse coats seem to have hair going all directions.

Thank you Nikki for commissioning me to immortalise Freckles for you

Clear for Take Off

I started work on this piece quite some time ago.. and just could work out what it was that I wasn't happy with... finally decided that it needed a change of back ground colour.. so out came the black and now I feel its working much better makes the horse and rider stand out.

Feather in my Cap

Feather in my Cap

Sometimes when you complete a work your not entirely happy with it when you come back and take a look later on.

That's been the case with Feather in my Cap it wasn't until I photographed the finished drawing that I realised there was a mark on the paper. Rather than rework the entire drawing I decided to add a back ground colour...

I think he blue back ground brings the horse and little girl more forward toward to the foreground in the drawing.. so thank goodness for that mark.

A Feather in my Cap... work in progress

A Feather in my Cap - work in progress

Its funny how when you look at a work on the computer you can see all the things that need to be altered...

Really happy with the progress on A Feather in my Cap so far.. I made a good start on the horse.. though still quite a lot to do on its head and perhaps the direction of that rump curve as well

I blocked in the saddle cloth to give me an idea of where the darks fall on the horses body underneath that saddle colth

A Feather in my cap.. work in progress

A Feather in my Cap - work in progress

After two weeks out of the studio its so nice to be back and back in full swing.
A Feather in my Cap .. is another of the pastel pieces I will be taking to Arizona with me...

This morning has been spent working on the girls hat, hair and shirt...

The hat and hair will need a few more lights and Im debating if the sleeve will need to be thinned down a little..

Two as One... work in progress .. stage 3

Two as One - stage 3

The saddle and jeans are now completed.. and Ive now started work on the horses chest and neck... the colour in the riders shirt is still up to debate..
I may make it all pink or shades of pink.. or a mixture of colours to give the illusion of texture with out detracting from the rest of the drawing..

Two as One will be 12" x 24" approx upon completion

Two as One .. work in progress Stage 2

Two as One .. work in progress Stage 2

Really happy with the progress of Two as One .. Ive finished the horses rear end the shadows are important to give the impression of muscles and movement in the horse..

A good start has been made on the saddle and saddle blanket.

After marking in the blue for the jeans and the highlights on the girls shirt...I called it quits for the day

Two as One will be 12" x 24" approx upon completion

Trainers in Training - update

Trainers in Training update
Ive made a start on the mouldy railings the children are standing on.. finding it necessary to darken their cloths a little more to stand out against the rails.

Green is such a challenging colour to work with..

Trainers in Training is on target to meet my entry deadline for the upcoming Inglis exhibition entries... phew

Trainers in training

Trainers in Training - work in progress

Trainers in Training is currently a work in progress and is one of my entries for the Inglis Equine Art Prize here in Australia..

The theme for the exhibition is life on the stud farm... it seemed an appropriate image to paint of these 3 kids almost inspecting this young thoroughbred horse... assessing its prospects as a future winner.. and there becoming the industries future trainers..

Trainers in Training is a watercolour and will be 14" x 21" unframed size upon completion.. I'm enjoying the complexity of the fabric folds in the kids shorts...
