Trainers in training

Trainers in Training - work in progress

Trainers in Training is currently a work in progress and is one of my entries for the Inglis Equine Art Prize here in Australia..

The theme for the exhibition is life on the stud farm... it seemed an appropriate image to paint of these 3 kids almost inspecting this young thoroughbred horse... assessing its prospects as a future winner.. and there becoming the industries future trainers..

Trainers in Training is a watercolour and will be 14" x 21" unframed size upon completion.. I'm enjoying the complexity of the fabric folds in the kids shorts...

New Oil Painting by Kerry Nelson

A herd of wild mustangs gallop for sanctuary over the side of a steep hill. With the future of America's wild horses in question, I find myself dispairing of thier fate, and, I am impelled to paint them (always a favorite subject of my art) once again, perhaps in an attempt to capture the freedom, beauty, and, dignity that our wild horses have always represented...at least to me!

WIP - New equine fantasy art by Kerry Nelson

"Braiding Mother's Hair" 16x20 oil on panel.  Work in Progress.

They're mostly horse!  Ha!  Here's a bit of background info from my blog:
"It is not my intention to mimic any one culture, rather, to create a plausible sub-culture that might exist if centaurs were real and living among human cultures of the ancient times.
This family is obviously well off with a palacial estate and many luxuries. Here, the mother is having her eldest daughter braid her mane and help her with her dressing for a night out with her husband when he returns home. The youngest daughter entertains them with chatter and play. She and her pets find the occassion very exciting and festive and as a result is always getting underfoot."

This painting is nearly finished, just awaiting a little more detailing.   Please visit my blog to see the complete session-by-session posting of this work from concept and drawing to the present stage of work with many detail close-up photos that can be enlarged by clicking on the photos.   See it here:

Living thier lives along the edges of the Malpais lava flows in southcentral New Mexico, this little family of mustangs seeks sanctuary and grazing among the treacherous walls and boulders of razor sharp volcanic rock.

Summer Classic 2009

ISS Summer Classic

Earlier this year I was invited to create this years work of art to feature on all advertising for the ISS Summer Classic Show jumping event here in Australia.  The committee have purchased the original work of art to be gifted to the shows main sponsor.

As an added bonus I get to  have a display of my artwork on at the p resentation evening.  Very exciting for me as there will be some big names in the equestrian world of show jumping attending.
