Fantazia by Catherin McMillan

Fantazia

Fantazia was the original drawing and painting for my watercolour Enchanted. I decided that it was too large to achieve the look I wanted in watercolour. Having made that decision I didnt want to through the original away and had a mad idea that I could rework the original drawing/painting as a mixed media work.

So meet Fantazia 17" x 23" mixed medium I wanted it to be a more fantasy style drawing hence the blues in the horse is drawn in. Expressions of interest are being taken prior to this piece being taken to an exhibition.

Vertical (Bellator)

"Vertical (Bellator)," from the March Virtual pARTy photograph supplied by Linda Shantz, 8" x 16", acrylic on canvasboard, $529 to the first one who asks nicely. Inquiries (including booking your own pet portrait, from miniature size [4" x 4"] to larger than life) may always come to me.

So what's a Virtual pARTy? It's when a group of artists create art using the same reference photo. It's fascinating how each participant makes something uniquely theirs - the resulting body of work is a great study in the variety of interpretations possible.

This year Linda and I are trying to host pARTys more regularly - it was sort of hit and miss when we did them last year, which made it harder for others to plan on joining. So far it's worked out to be mid-month, every month. Check out the project blog for more details - rumor has it we might be doing a dog themed pARTy in the future.

So back to Bellator: I thought two things when I saw the photograph for this month's Virtual pARTy - one, the horse looked very much like those Katie Upton (one of my favorite artists ever) paints. And two, that blaze had to be front and center - I was going to break the rule about keeping your focal point from the middle of your canvas.

Thanks, as always, for looking at - and sharing - my artwork with your friends and family.

And happy weekend!
Kim

New Dressage Casein -"Shades Of Gray #3 "

"Shades Of Gray #3"            casein on paper               9 x 12"

Even though the day started a bit gray, the sun came out and Spring called to me as I worked in my studio, saying "Come and play...the winter was cold and deep, but now it is time to come out and enjoy the warmth of spring and promises of things to come." I listened but kept painting, finishing this one casein of a gray/white dressage horse for my "Shades of Gray" series. This is number 3....there are more to come...all playing with the discovery of colors in a gray horse brought out by the light and shadows. This painting as already been put up onto my website........
.
Now I am headed out for a bit to rake leaves from winter weary gardens while, the pups play.

Painting a Dog a Day by Kimberly Kelly Santini

"Checkered Silks," from the Saratoga Series, 8" x 10", acrylic on Ampersand Gessoboard, depicting racehorses in the paddock at Saratoga, $499 to the first one asking nicely. Inquiries (including booking commissioned artwork from miniature size [4" x 4"] to larger than life) may always come to me.

The sunshine we've had the last couple days has made me want more. After a gray winter, I am so ready for snow to melt and the light to bounce off a green lawn and flood the house. Of course, that also means windows must be washed and spring cleaning is around the corner, but I'll just ignore that part.

So today (well, in all honesty, yesterday is when I started this painting) I worked on this scene from the paddock at Saratoga Race Course in New York. The reference photo was from a rainy afternoon (hence the jocks' rain gear - I don't know what their breeches are called but I'm sure someone will tell me), however I amped the contrast a little so as to provide a glimmer of sun as the storms clear.

And, as always happens with my artwork, once I scan or photograph a painting, I see a few changes I'd like to make. I'll sit with this piece for a couple days and see what else it tells me. But so far, I'm very happy with it.

Thanks, as always, for looking at - and sharing - my artwork with your friends and family.
