Starlight by moonlight

I've got a bit more time to play with than I usually do these days since my saddle is off being refitted and I'm not riding. I still go to the boarding stable most days to visit my horse and check on him, but it certainly doesn't take up my whole afternoon the way it does when I ride.
This being the case, I've been doing some Photoshop work with my bank of images. I'm currently working on a "mystical" theme and this is the first one of a set of variations I've done featuring this white horse. His name is Starlight, so the title "Starlight by Moonlight" seems like the right one. I've done a couple of other versions of this, both a little stranger, with my "ghost child" and crows and a black cat. You can check them out on my home website
if you'd like to see them. I'm just getting going on this series and other related ones, so stay tuned and see what develops.
Starlight (barn name Sparky) is a favorite model of mine, and you can see war pony versions of him on my website in the "War Ponies" gallery. He makes a great "ghost" horse.

Winter Whiskers, Chestnut Horse

From my daily painting project, Painting a Dog a Day, I give you "Winter Whiskers II (Chestnut Horse)," 4" x 8", acrylic equine painting on canvasboard, $249 to the first taker, with proceeds going to the Oakland Pet Adoption Center (my local shelter). Inquiries may come to .
I just can't say enough good things about my local shelter, the Oakland Pet Adoption Center. In the face of some tough times in our community, they are staying on track with respect to putting animal welfare first. I am so proud that the Dog-a-Day painting sales support their efforts. In Your Face (Buttons) by Catherin McMillan

In Your Face (Buttons)

Ive started working with a horse rescue group called TREW rescue which is based in Victoria Australia. TREW is very involved with helping the horses that have been effected by the terrible bush fires that are occurring in Victoria at the moment.

Currently organising feed, water, medical care and a safe place to house all the injured and homeless horses and ponies.

In Your Face (buttons) is one of the many horses that they currently care for. I hadn't planned to work on this piece for a couple of weeks but given the current situation felt that I should fast track this piece.

In Your Face is pastel on canson paper 9" x 11" in size.

Price: $175.00 + postage 10% of the sale price will go directly to TREW rescue where the money is desperately needed now more than ever.

Payment can be made by pay pal Email:

for the next month 10% from the price of any commission booked or sale of original artwork from either or will go directly to the Victorian Fire appeal.

Wrinkles-Hackney stallion

This is one I worked up this morning from a shot I took last fall. I take a ton of horse photos, then they often languish unlooked at in the computer until I stumble upon them and see that there are some possibilities I can explore.

As always, I did some Photoshop work on this one, and as always I really have no idea how I came up with the end result or what exactly I did. I work with my photos in quite an intuitive "trial and error" way. Makes it hard to duplicate effects, but keeps my eye fresh as I have to approach each new visual with an open mind and no formulas or preconceptions.

One of the reasons I was working on this one is that I finally have my photo art website up and I am busily adding images to the various galleries. I have a good number of images on the site already, with many more yet to be added. There will be new categories added as I get time to sort it all out. Check it out at  . You can also check my blog if you are so inclined for more photos and stories.

"Joy," 8" square portrait of a Thoroughbred, acrylic on canvasboard,  private collection.

This painting is part of my daily project "Painting a Dog a Day." Despite it's title, I break the rules and paint equines, felines, and other furred and feathered things.

I also welcome commissions. I am currently booking portraits for February 2010. Please send your inquiries to
