Me and My Bud, Budweiser Clydesdale, that is!

Me and My Bud! by Sue Steiner

Last month I celebrated the Grand Opening of my new art studio, White Horse Studio during Canton's First Friday art events. My grand opening coincided with a special appearance of the Budweiser Clydesdales. As an equine and animal artist I could not of been happier with the timing! As part of the activities I did this as a painting demo. It measures 7 ft x 4 ft. - not quite real life but I figured I needed to do something large since these animals themselves as so impressive! It was quite a treat to see them and be a part of the activities as they drew quite a crowd. The horses are spectacular! The whole evening was great and I got to meet new horse people in my studio who came to see my equine art.

For information on original equine and animal art or info on commission me for a portrait please visit my web site at http://www.suesteiner.com .

To read about the namesake of my studio please visit my blog to read about a special rescue horse who is my inspiration and muse.

Thank you!

Draft day

Trying to get back in the studio after some fun busy weekends away and getting hay in the barn and finished up this Percheron. She belongs to a friend who does carriage rides but this was definitely a day off for her. We had just returned with another team from a country drive and she was glad to see them back.
This original 5x7 matted (8x10) watercolor is available for $60 plus $5 S&H to the first emailer to lojomjnc@charter.net.
I am also offering 5x7 giclees for $10 plus $5 S&H.

Beast of Burden by Kimberly Kelly Santini

"Beast of Burden," 8" x 16", commissioned donkey painting, done in acrylics on canvasboard, part of a corporate collection (THANK YOU!). Inquiries may come to me.

I have been commissioned to create a new series of paintings depicting the plight of animals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It's a tough subject matter, for the majority of the animals I've seen (via photographs) have been malnourished, terribly overworked, and suffer a poor quality of life. I want to paint them as they are, but also highlight the majesty and strength they possess. It's a wonderful challenge and i've enjoyed working the concepts up.

You can read more about my client, the Amsale Gessesse Memorial Foundation, and their advocacy at their website. The Foundation has partnered with Best Friends Animal Sanctuary and the Humane Society International, pioneering a Trap Neuter Program in Addidas Ababa and making significant progress in countering this community's homeless pet problem. Additinal information is on the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary website. It is an honor to support the Foundation's efforts through Painting a Dog a Day.

Thanks as always for sharing my paintings!

My Kingdom For A Horse: The Andalusian Stallion Bandolero

I was fortunate enough to visit Emerald Ridge Andalusians last Fall and photograph their imported stallion Bandolero CLXXVI, or Bando, as Toni and David call him. I was amazed at his immense presence, yet he is every bit a gentleman and so sweet!

It has taken me almost a year to put aside the time to paint Bando, as I knew he must be done in oil and it is one of the last mediums for me to try. I must admit to being intimidated and consequently dragged my heals for a while! Surprisingly, it came together with a lot of grace; much like Bando himself. It's such a thrill to work with what I would call 'a lucky shot' and a beautiful animal. As the old song goes... you take my breath away!

Foal Painting & Watercolor Hunter WIP

Another painting finished. I am really enjoying the process of doing a daily painting. This is another small piece measuring 8 x 10, acrylic on canvas board. Titled Morning Light it captures a foal lying down in the tall grass. This is a very familiar sight this time of year around these parts. I used a reference photo from the Wet Canvas ref library. This one is available for sale for $45 and includes Priority Mail shipping. To Purchase
And be sure to check out some of this weeks previous offerings.

In addition to this acrylic painting I have been working on a rather large (for me) watercolor of a hunter (horse). This measure 14 x 11. The support I am using here is Arches Cold Press paper. Not my favorite paper so I am giving it another chance to see if I like it. I do LOVE to paint on Arches Hot Press. It is a lovely super smooth surface and it just lets me push the paint around. Today I am posting WIP1 & 2 (WIP stands for Work In Progress). It is very much in the uglies stage at this point but we will push through! ☺
First glazes going down here. When I work with these watercolor horse paintings I need to lay down a very detailed sketch first. Watercolor is not very forgiving since so many of the pigments I like working with are very staining so they won’t lift very easily.

Starting to throw a better shape here. Patience and more patience. More WIPS tomorrow! Remember, all images are clickable for an enlarged view. Have a great one!
