Been a while since I posted a blog .. will make sure to remedy that this year.. the last couple of months have been what you could call a write off ..

Finished Peek a Boo off this morning I decided to use a different paper from my usual canson pastel paper.. 

 

This time around I used art spectrum "colour fix" which is a little like working on smooth sandpaper giving the image a textured look.

 

Peek a Boo is  off to WA for an exhibition unless sold prior...

"Little Spider," 6" square, portrait of a Thoroughbred foal, done in Golden Open Acrylics on Ampersand Gessobord, $299. Spider's painting will go to the first one asking nicely. It's tradition in the studio that, in honor of the first Saturday in May and the Kentucky Derby, Painting a Dog a Day gets turned over to the horses during Derby Week. Spider's doing the honor of kicking things off in grand style. Hailing from a girlfriend's farm (fellow artist Linda Shantz), he's now a strapping 2 year old in training, learning to put those long legs to work. And Linda's got a crop of 3 new foals this year. One foal, three wild moves....

Here is Zig Zag a little 3 day old filly.
On the day of the shoot she spent the better part of 15 minutes at full speed and literally on her toes: bubbling with life and overflowing with energy.
Ciao, Fancy Free and Footloose have been my way of studying and illustrating and understanding her baby "steps".
The very interesting thing about drawing foals is the way in which you have to render their little muscles: they are so defined and tense yet underdeveloped. The other thing is the over-dimensional width and length of their legs...a little surreal. However, I really just can't help smiling when drawing them.

Stretchin' It

Robert and I were on a photo shoot near Ovando, Mt, on our way over Huckleberry Pass when we drove through a field full of horses. There were over one hundred horses and mules, in all shapes, sizes, ages and breeds.

This little guy was stretching down to get the good Montana prairie grass and he reminded me of the die hard exercise people in the fitness centers, getting a good stretch....
