I Need a Name

Not me (I've got lots of them, some not suitable for print), but this little baby.

Originally I had titled this piece "Siesta," because the foal looked incredibly sleepy in my reference photo. However, somewhere along the way, that changed a bit. So I'm open to suggestions!

Congratulations to JR who suggested "Sprout" as the title - she will receive a cell phone case in appreciation for her mad painting naming skills!

Kentucky Derby Week - Baby Girl by Kimberly Santini

"Baby Girl," 7" x 12", acrylics on museum quality panel, depicting a Thoroughbred filly full of baby curls and chestnut precociousness. The reference photo inspiring this one is from a visit to friend and fellow artist Linda Shantz's farm. Like Her Momma ~~ Kimberly Kelly Santini

"Like Her Momma," from the "Cherished" series. This little gem is 6" x 8", acrylics on a museum quality panel, and not currently for sale. However, inquiries may always come to me. And in process views of this painting are on the studio's Facebook page. I've entered this painting into an international juried equine art exhibition (for those who are curious, the Equine Jubilee in Delaware, Ohio from August through October of this year). And as such, if accepted, the painting will have to be available for purchase at the event. I sent these ladies along with two other paintings from the Saratoga series - fingers and toes crossed that the jurors like my work enough to include them all. (And yes, I get rejected regularly from shows - it's all about one person's opinion at one particular moment in time, so  don't beat yourself up over it should the same thing happen to you) Meanwhile, if you really, really, really want to purchase "Like Her Momma" (and I totally get it, because she's my current all time favorite painting to come off the easel), shoot me an email and I'll make sure you get first dibs on her via the event coordinators. Happy 4th of July!! I'll be chill-axing tomorrow, painting the front and back porches and doing yard work while tossing the frisbee and setting the sprinkler up for this guy. I hope that your mid-week holiday is equally productive or equally peaceful - however you ordered it up! And let's hope that all those fireworks crazed critters, like Finnigan, stay safe.

Hugo's pARTy !!

it's a pARTy !!   What's a pARTy, you ask? It's when a group of artists use the same reference material to create their work.   In our case, it was the photo above, supplied by Linda Shantz, starring one of her Thoroughbred babies, Hugo.   She invited a core group of friends to participate. Connected

This 24 x24 oil is at the Collective Fine Art Gallery in Fort Collins. In this painting I'm trying to use the same technique that I've been using with my Totem Animal series - but with the suggestion of a landscape, since I want to show the mare and foal connected not only to each other, but to their surroundings. Both the mare and foal are aware of the viewer, and so the connection goes beyond their world and enters ours, as we enter theirs.

One foal, three wild moves....

Here is Zig Zag a little 3 day old filly.
On the day of the shoot she spent the better part of 15 minutes at full speed and literally on her toes: bubbling with life and overflowing with energy.
Ciao, Fancy Free and Footloose have been my way of studying and illustrating and understanding her baby "steps".
The very interesting thing about drawing foals is the way in which you have to render their little muscles: they are so defined and tense yet underdeveloped. The other thing is the over-dimensional width and length of their legs...a little surreal. However, I really just can't help smiling when drawing them.

Thoughts of Spring - and Foals!

I almost sold this pastel painting a week ago, but the woman decided that she wanted an oil instead. I had to take it out of storage and hung it on the wall while she made up her mind. It has been such a cheerful addition to that wall that I've left it up and have enjoyed it every day since.

This little foal had just been turned out with his mother and was showing his juvenile exuberance by running, bucking and prancing around the pasture, doing lots of "airs above the ground". The title is "Feel So Fine" and it is available for purchase framed. And They're Off!

Well, I'm a little slow out of the gate joining things around here! Thanks to Donna Ridgeway for getting things going.

My name is Linda Shantz, and while I often paint more generic horse images, my passion is Thoroughbred racing. When I'm not working with or watching these horses, I'm painting them. Oil, oil pastel and pencil are my usual media. This time of year in my neck of the woods things are relatively quiet -- the season at Woodbine is over, the horses either off for a few months or in one of the southern states to train in more hospitable climates. I have a barn full of layups, weanlings and broodmares. It won't be long before foal watch starts! These horses are a constant inspiration.
