Valarie Wolf - A couple of New Paintings

'Waiting For Direction' 8" x 10" oil

These two oil paintings are done in a more traditional sytle.  I am starting to pay more attention to light and shadow, and am enjoying the process.  The horse is actually 'made up' meaning, the body of the horse is taken from a photo I took of a ceramic horse of mine.  I changed the position of the head and neck.  This is something I thought I would never attain- to actually formulate a painting from my mind.





I just finished this little head study.  Here again, I am concentrating on lights and shadows, and incorporating warm and cool colors which adds such dimension and interest to a painting. I quite like the loose background with the greens contrasting with the reddish color of the horse.  I think this little horse has such a sweet expression.

Toronto's Royal Winter Fair - Fine Art Showcase 2010!

I haven't been pulling my weight around here! It's been ages since I posted, though I often come by to have a look at the wonderful work my colleagues are producing! I've been inspired to share a bit of news, and hopefully I'll do my bit and post more often!

Last year I was juried into the Royal Winter Fair's Fine Art Showcase with my pencil drawing, "Adjustments." It was a fun experience, and the show was supported with a grant from the Government of Canada "Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage" program, which was quite exciting. This allowed the show to have a demonstration stage, and I was one of the artists asked to paint at the show. I've been attending the Royal since I was quite young - I've lost track how long - so it was neat to be part in this way.

Last week I received word that the painting I submitted for this year's show - "Ground Rules" (above), a 12 x 16 oil - was accepted for inclusion. Thursday I delivered my painting to the Royal offices, accompanied by friend and fellow artist Lise Leblanc whose lovely oil painting "Belle's Buttons and Bows" was also accepted. If you're at the Royal this year, be sure to look for the exhibit. It will be in the Direct Energy Building, Heritage Court, which is an amazing location.

Desert Horse

I began this painting as part of my daily paintings I post on my blog at http://www.amulti-coloredlife.blogspot.com/ I must confess though I did take more than one sitting to finished this. I began with the idea that this horse would be in a pasture with trees in the background but as it developed I began to see it as a desert setting because I was really enjoying the warm ground and cool colors reflected in the horses coat so it evolved into what it is now.

New Kid On The Block

Thank you to Donna for inviting me to join in on this unique blog.

My name is Karen Baker Thumm, and I hail from northern Michigan. I work mostly in oils, pastels and pencil and specialize in sport horse art with some landscapes and wildlife thrown in. You can visit my website here or my personal art blog here. There are several pieces of art for sale there, and I have a few more that are waiting to be put up for sale for one reason or another.

Below is a photo of me on my horse, Scottie, taken two weeks ago in the indoor arena where I board. Northern Michigan winters are not suitable for outdoor riding most of the time, so we're all cooped up until Spring arrives. This photo is very blurry because the camera battery was about to die, but it does prove that I do ride.



Next I'm posting a work in progress of a team of Belgians. I've done a little more on it since this photo was taken but it's not fit to show just yet. Do you like the pink coat on the righthand horse? It's an experiment.

Well, I'm a little slow out of the gate joining things around here! Thanks to Donna Ridgeway for getting things going.

My name is Linda Shantz, and while I often paint more generic horse images, my passion is Thoroughbred racing. When I'm not working with or watching these horses, I'm painting them. Oil, oil pastel and pencil are my usual media. This time of year in my neck of the woods things are relatively quiet -- the season at Woodbine is over, the horses either off for a few months or in one of the southern states to train in more hospitable climates. I have a barn full of layups, weanlings and broodmares. It won't be long before foal watch starts! These horses are a constant inspiration.

Here's another horse painting for sale. Fire Fox is a painting of one of my cousin's ranch horses. He's a mellow color of buckskin and when the sun lit him up, I thought he was so beautiful, I had to paint him.

I liked the way he bowed his head, like he was worshiping the warm sun God.
