Buy A Painting, Save A Horse!

A few months ago I took in my first 'kill pen' rescue horse who was one step away from going to slaughter.  About a two months ago I took in another, Darcy, a beautiful 5 yr. old registered Quarter Horse.  I am awaiting the arrival of Johnny Walker, my 3rd kill pen rescue.  I was helped in providing a home for these horses thru facebook friends'donations and the people at Another Chance 4 Horses at http://www.ac4h.com/  This began the seed of an idea for me to begin the Save A Face Project.   Obviously, there is a limit as to how many horses I can take in.  The rescues are full to bursting and more horses each week go to slaughter that could potentially be saved if we get the word out as to how to rescue and where to go. 

My idea is to first sell an original oil painting on e-bay thru the Giving Works Program.  A portion of the proceeds will go to a designated rescue.  E-bay handles dividing the money which is wonderful as far as I am concerned.  I don't have to get involved in redirecting money.  As a buyer you can know where your money is going. 

The second phase consists of selling limited edition playing card sized collectible prints called ACEO's also on e-bay.  They usually sell for for $5.00-8.00  and have the rescue information printed on the back to encourage people to become involved in helping the rescues.  Or they can just collect ACEO's, show them off and pass them around, knowing that in itself is a great help! 

I am calling the project Save A Face because as an animal portrait artist I know the power of faces.  Put a face to a cause and now its real and people can connect.  The faces will be of actual animals that are either happy examples of taking in rescues or the faces of so many in need.

Life Sized Horse Paintings

I seemed to have settled into an area of 'speciality' thanks to the numerous murals I have done over the last couple of years.  This specialty is painting life sized horses and farm animals.  I paint portraits in oils on standard sized canvases and enjoy this very much but also have found a niche in painting large.  In the photo you can see me working on a recent commission that will become an outdoor mural on an existing barn.  The wood panels will be placed in the spot above a dutch door stall opening so from the house the owner can look out and see the family's much loved horses memorialized in their spot in the barn.  I will be doing a whole series, each one a special horse in this family's lives over the years. 

I loved this idea!  We also have some special horses in our lives as I am sure many of you do too!  My daughter's horse Flicka in particular is a once in a lifetime horse.  I could not of asked for a sweeter, kinder soul to carry my daughter thru her childhood!  Flicka is still with us but I want to remember this idea and do the same when the time comes so I can look out my window to my barn and remember some very special times of my daughter's childhood.

Last month I celebrated the Grand Opening of my new art studio, White Horse Studio during Canton's First Friday art events. My grand opening coincided with a special appearance of the Budweiser Clydesdales. As an equine and animal artist I could not of been happier with the timing! As part of the activities I did this as a painting demo. It measures 7 ft x 4 ft. - not quite real life but I figured I needed to do something large since these animals themselves as so impressive! It was quite a treat to see them and be a part of the activities as they drew quite a crowd. The horses are spectacular! The whole evening was great and I got to meet new horse people in my studio who came to see my equine art.

Belgians in the Field and other Daily Paintings

For several months now I have been posting 'daily paintings' on my blog at http://www.amulti-coloredlife.blogspot.com/ I confess I don't do a daily painting each day but rather fit them in between commissions and other more involved paintings. A daily painting for me is one defined as being completed in one sitting. The idea is to pack as much as I can into these paintings but because of the self imposed time limit I can not get too 'fussy'. What happens is the brushstrokes become bolder and more efficient and the work is looser and livelier. Thats the idea anyways! Equine and Animal Artist

A Horse Portrait in Oils

I recently finished this painting of 'Iggy', a bright, coppery chestnut owned and loved by Sarah living in Kentucky. He's a big boy but I particularly enjoyed painting his soft, white and pink muzzle. I imagined his soft breath on my hand, reminding me of some of my favorite moments with my horses- their soft muzzle, warm breath, welcoming nickers, the sounds of them munching their hay. I got to reexperience those sights and sounds thru a child's eye yesterday with a friend's son who was celebrating his 9th birthday. I got a chance to 'make his day' by taking him around on my dear sweet kid's horse as he gibber gabbered all that he knew about horses.

As an equine and animal artist I get to combine all the things I love- animals, the tender part of people that comes out around babies and animals and art.

Desert Horse

I began this painting as part of my daily paintings I post on my blog at http://www.amulti-coloredlife.blogspot.com/ I must confess though I did take more than one sitting to finished this. I began with the idea that this horse would be in a pasture with trees in the background but as it developed I began to see it as a desert setting because I was really enjoying the warm ground and cool colors reflected in the horses coat so it evolved into what it is now.

'A Horse Painting a Day'

Going Green

After working on detailed commissions all summer I wanted to loosen up and have some fun so I painted this more abstract equine acrylic painting the other day. I played with the colors to arrive at the newest addition to my Cafe Press Shop so equestrians can endorse recycling and 'Green' environmental efforts too. This just puts a horsey spin on it. A horsey spin is always a good thing unless the 'spin' is part of a spook and bolt but we won't think about that!

I do believe if horses could talk they would say that they most definitely are all for 'going green'--going into the green pastures with lots of green grass is top priority in the minds of all horses! Horses even start off their riding careers green in which horsey spins are more likely! Oops, there I went spinning off in that directions again!

Painting Demonstration

This weekend I was at a special art event in which I did some painting demonstrations of equine and farm animal art. The back drop of this photo is my most recent mural of a team of Amish draft horses at a hitching post. On my easle is a work in progress painting of Daisy, a large holstein cow. I live in an Amish and farming community so these subjects are characteristic of my town and quite fitting for me to paint because animals are a favorite subject of mine!

Draft Horse Slates

While getting ready for an upcoming show I put together some draft horse barn siding slates like the ones above. I added some bronze so the horses have just a hint of metalic sheen to them which I think goes well with the texture of the slate-- giving an overall feeling of power, strength and beauty-- just like the draft horses themselves. Looking Back

Don't you wonder sometimes what they see that we miss? I liked the idea of the faraway expression that horses get out in an open field. Its like you can take the horse out of the wild but not the wildness out of the horse! Here's to that free spirit inside every horse.

New Equine Art

I still need just a few finishing touches on this portrait and that it will be finished. This is a mixed media painting that is a sample of my work. I particularly enjoy painting horses and am available for commissioned portraits. I also have original work in acrylics, oils, watercolor and pastel on my web site. I have painted life-sized horse murals down to 9 x 12 paintings like the one above.

This time of year it is a tie between my two favorite pastime-- either riding horses or painting them! I rode my two chestnut horses today (not at the same time-- I am not that good!!) and was reminded again what good therapy horses are for me! I was feeling a little stressed today but that amazing process of the stress falling away begins as I step into the barn and spend time with my horses. I think that is why I enjoy equine art as well. My hope is to capture the essence of the horse and to bring the experience of being with them inside to enjoy. I hope you enjoy as well!

Mixed Media Equine Art

I've titled this piece 'Mirage'. It is on display at the Horse Fest in Kirtland, Ohio's LakeFarm Park until May 19, 2008. In this painting I wanted to give the illusion of strength and beauty in a very fluid way to simulate the movement of a horse at liberty. One of my greatest joys is watching my horses out in the pasture romping and snorting and having a good ol' time!

Amish Buggy Horse Portrait

I painted this very recently. It is primarily watercolor with a wee bit of CP and acrylic ink.

I am an artist living in Amish County in Ohio. I also happen to love painting horses so buggy horses and work horses are often subjects in my paintings. Since I love all things equine I widen my range and paint a whole variety of horses, donkeys, mules etc. I also paint farm animals, people, flowers and the occassional landscape as well as pet and horse portraits. I like to work in a wide range also from life sized horse murals on display at Lehman's in Kidron, Ohio to intricate floral watercolors. I work in acrylics, watercolor, graphite, colored pencil, oils and pastels.
