Looking Back

Don't you wonder sometimes what they see that we miss? I liked the idea of the faraway expression that horses get out in an open field. Its like you can take the horse out of the wild but not the wildness out of the horse! Here's to that free spirit inside every horse.

Here's "Elbow Room".

The wee story behind this drawing is the direct result of Albert Camus' fantastic quote "freedom is nothing else but a chance to be better".

SO, I decided to take a (well needed) break from commission and exhibition work, let go of the various pressures and see what my mind would give me.

I became deaf to "what might be nice to draw" and set myself instead a biggish technical challenge.

How do you or rather how would I give a vertical line energy?

"Elbow Room" is taken from reference photos I have had (stashed away in both my mind and studio) for over 7 years. This is the foreleg of a Rh.D. Kaltblutt stallion stationed at the Warendorf National Stud (Landgestuet Warendorf) .

I used pencil (2B & 6B) for the entire drawing. The shadow on the left leg is "glazed" over with loose charcoal (6B).

Percherons

My new acryilc painting WAITING TO GET ON THE LAND shows what the fields around here looked like just a few weeks ago. Spring has such a sense of waiting for exciting things to happen. Even the animals seem to be waiting to get on with things, like these two Percherons, waiting for the fields to dry so ploughing can begin.

Sunset ghost herd

I have done quite a few of these "ghost" images, which appeal to me on a number of levels. I like to create images with a bit of visual ambiguity, where you have to look a second time to understand what you are seeing, and make your own interpretation of what is going on.

I try not to duplicate my posted images from one blog site to another, so you can always check my "home" blog page http://judywoodartphotography.blogspot.com/ to check out a lot of other visuals, not all equine, but lots of horses there.

New Equine Art

I still need just a few finishing touches on this portrait and that it will be finished. This is a mixed media painting that is a sample of my work. I particularly enjoy painting horses and am available for commissioned portraits. I also have original work in acrylics, oils, watercolor and pastel on my web site. I have painted life-sized horse murals down to 9 x 12 paintings like the one above.

This time of year it is a tie between my two favorite pastime-- either riding horses or painting them! I rode my two chestnut horses today (not at the same time-- I am not that good!!) and was reminded again what good therapy horses are for me! I was feeling a little stressed today but that amazing process of the stress falling away begins as I step into the barn and spend time with my horses. I think that is why I enjoy equine art as well. My hope is to capture the essence of the horse and to bring the experience of being with them inside to enjoy. I hope you enjoy as well!

Mixed Media Equine Art

I've titled this piece 'Mirage'. It is on display at the Horse Fest in Kirtland, Ohio's LakeFarm Park until May 19, 2008. In this painting I wanted to give the illusion of strength and beauty in a very fluid way to simulate the movement of a horse at liberty. One of my greatest joys is watching my horses out in the pasture romping and snorting and having a good ol' time!
